Unexplained hematuria, proteinuria, abnormal renal function, or sometimes renal mass can be indications for needle biopsy.

First, proteinuria. Most proteinuria is caused by chronic glomerulonephritis, but chronic glomerulonephritis is divided into many pathological types, such as IgA nephropathy, membranous nephropathy, membranous proliferative nephritis, then different pathological types, its treatment plan and prognosis It is very different, so a needle biopsy needs to be done to clarify the pathology.

There are also some patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, and some may be combined with tumors of the blood system. When proteinuria occurs, we cannot judge whether it is a simple kidney disease or a kidney disease caused by hypertension and diabetes. At this time, a renal puncture is also required to clarify the cause.

In addition, some patients with renal insufficiency, such as acute nephritis, have atypical clinical manifestations, and the disease has not recovered after a period of treatment. There are also some with persistent and progressive increase in serum creatinine, and we can also perform puncture if we want to find the cause of these renal insufficiencies. But if the kidney volume shrinks significantly, it suggests chronic renal failure, and we don't do a kidney biopsy.
